Gloucester Cathedral and Whispering Gallerywill be open for free public visits as part of Heritage Open Days.
Formerly the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter, founded in the 11 century, the Cathedral features Norman pillars in the nave, the elaborate tomb of Edward II, exquisite 14 century fan vaulted cloisters, the magnificent 15 century tower and east window, the largest in England.
The Whispering Gallery was created when a passageway was built behind the Great East Window of the Cathedral in the 14 century. Entry into the gallery includes the opportunity to see this wonderful window "up close" and to see an exhibition on its origins and meanings.
The Cathedral is open Thursday 9 September - Friday 10 September: 1000 - 1700, Saturday 11 September: 1000 - 1600, Sunday 12 September: 1200 - 1430 and 1600 - 1700.
The Whispering Gallery is open Saturday 11 September: 1030 - 1530.
