George Whitefield

The impact of Whitefield through his preaching on both English and American society was immense. He was an accomplished performer of no mean ability and his gestures were said to be natural and effective; but his greatest asset was his magnificent voice. Benjamin Franklin calculated that he could be heard by 30,000 people at any one time.

Hubert Cecil Booth

Booth was a mechanical and civil engineer who, following study at the City and Guilds Institute, joined Maudslay, Sons and Field, marine engineers, designing engines for Royal Navy battleships. In 1894 he was commissioned to design a Great Wheel for Earl’s Court in London, and also similar structures in Blackpool, Paris, and the world famous one in Vienna.

Bishop John Hooper


John Hooper

The second bishop of Gloucester was born in 1495 in Somerset, the son of well-to-do 
parents. On completion of his education at Oxford, he is believed to have become 
a monk at the Cistercian monastery 
at Cleeve, and later a friar at Blackfriars 
in Gloucester.

Sir Charles Wheatstone

Charles Wheatstone

The great Victorian physicist was born 
above the family shop at 52/54 
Westgate Street in February 1802 and 
baptised at nearby St Mary de Lode 
church. At the age of fourteen he 
was apprenticed to his uncle who was a manufacturer of musical instruments in 
The Strand, London.
