Barnwood Park is a green open space and is therefore free to use.
Admission into the Arboretum is also free.
Barnwood Park and Arboretum is an award winning green space, having regularly achieved Green Flag status in recent years. The Green Flag is a national award for the best green spaces in the country.
Barnwood Park and Arboretum were once part of the grounds of Barnwood House, which for some years was a private hospital, finally closing in the 1960s and reverting to a private dwelling. Part of the grounds was aquired by Gloucester City Council and developed as Barnwood Park.
Barnwood House was eventually demolished in 2001 and the area of land now known as Barnwood Arboretum was given to Gloucester City Council. The Arboretum was designated a Local Nature Reserve in 2002 and is within Barnwood Park, accessed via a footbridge over Wootton Brook.
Both the Park and Arboretum have a mixture of magnificent mature trees including Giant Redwood, Turkey Oak, Dawn Redwood, Black Mulberry and a rare Variegated Beech. New trees have been planted by the Friends group to maintain a variety of trees into the future. The Arboretum is also managed for wildlife and is grazed by cattle and sheep from July to December/January. A wildlife pond was created in 2014.
