Majestic tall ships, international choirs and more designer shops make Gloucester an unmissable destination in 2010

2nd February 2010

Gloucester has just launched its 2010 visitor guide offering a stylish ‘shop window’ unveiling what’s new in the historic city and beyond.

Whether a weekend of designer shopping, an afternoon on a budget or a wet weather day, Gloucester offers something just a little bit different.

New for 2010 is the return of Europe’s oldest music festival, spectacular maritime entertainment and even more stylish shopping and cosmopolitan dining in one of the UK’s most exciting waterside regeneration schemes.

Heritage rich Gloucester is already a firm favourite for its mix of award winning attractions, exciting festivals and must-see events.

The city is also the perfect base to explore the surrounding area of the Cotswolds and Forest of Dean with its mix of romantic villages and magical woodland and the 2010 Gloucester Visitor Guide provides everything visitors need to plan a short break or day visit.

Among new events highlighted in the guide is the return of Europe’s oldest music festival, ‘The Three Choirs’, (7th-15th August), bringing an outstanding programme of choral music to the elegant setting of Gloucester Cathedral.

And after the success of two award-winning Tall Ships Festivals, an even more spectacular maritime festival is planned for 21st – 23rd May with tall ships, live entertainment, living history, music and much more.

Waterside development Gloucester Quays – which opened last year – will also be offering even more in 2010. The sympathetically designed complex’s second phase will bring more designer names to join the 100-plus already there as well as a great range of new waterfront restaurants and bars.

But Gloucester has it all for shoppers, from the independent traders in the shadow of Gloucester Cathedral in the Westgate Quarter, to the high street names in The Mall and Kings Walk Shopping Centre.

There’s plenty more to tempt visitors in 2010 too.

Gloucester Heritage Open Days (9th-12th September), the largest of its kind in the South West, gives visitors free access to over 100 events and buildings across the city while the year comes to a magical end with the seasonal Christmas in Gloucester Celebrations (November- January).

How about throwing yourself down a hill after a Double Gloucester cheese (or simply watching!) at the famously eccentric Cheese Rolling event (7th-15th May) or racing in Gloucester Docks at the Dragon Boat Racing (May)?

Add in history and heritage, tasty local food and drink – including famous Double Gloucester Cheese and Gloucester Old Spot Sausages – and an action-packed events programme, and the 2010 guide has it all wrapped up for visitors.
