Fair’s Fair!
17th February 2010
Gloucester is preparing to declare itself a 'Fair Trade City' over the coming months. The announcement coincides with the launch of Fair Trade fortnight next week.
Gloucester City Council has resolved to achieve fair trade status and intends to provide a lead to other companies and organisations in the city.
It is setting up a working group to find the best ways of promoting fair trade products.
It will be making sure that it uses as many products as possible that come from fair trade sources and will be looking to increase the range of things it uses with these labels.
Council Leader, Paul James, commented: “ In this day and age it is only right and proper that we make sure that the food, drinks and products we use come from fair trade sources.
“ This means that the producers of the goods in the poorer countries in the world have not only got a proper price but get help, support and encouragement to grow their businesses.
“ By taking these measures and by setting the right example we hope to be able to declare that not only is Gloucester a modern 21st century city but a Fair Trade city too.”
