Jet Age Museum Cleared For Take Off!
16th February 2012
Volunteers at Jet Age Museum are celebrating the signature of a the lease which will enable them to build a permanent home at Gloucestershire, Staverton. The charity, which was founded more than 20 years ago, now expects building work to begin in May, adjacent to the aptly named Meteor Business Park.
The museum's aircraft collection includes a Gloster Javelin, several marks of Meteor and a full scale replica of the E28/39, the first Allied jet to take to the skies. Restoration work is also continuing on a Gloster Gladiator, the last of the RAF's biplane fighters and a 1930's wooden Gamecock, which has taken nearly 20 years to complete.
A significant collection of photographs, manuals, drawings and other memorabilia has also been amassed charting the history of the Gloster Aircraft Company and aviation in the County.
Over £250,000 has been donated or pledged to the museum but more funds and assistance will be required to complete the project. Chairman, John Lewer said: - "We will be reliant on further donations to complete the project. We'll shortly be launching our 'Buy a Brick' campaign and we're very keen to hear from individuals or businesses who might be prepared to offer their time, expertise, equipment or building materials."
Gloucestershire Airport operations director, Darren Lewington added: - "Our county has such a rich aviation history and it is only right that this is remembered and preserved for future generations. We're proud to have been able to assist by offering the museum a site here at Staverton at a peppercorn rent and are very much looking forward to seeing the project completed."
The museum can be contacted at jetagemuseum@hotmail.co.uk
Details of forthcoming fundraising events will be posted on the museum's website and their Facebook page.
