Gloucester Guildhall have done it again! Cult 80's legends Echo & The Bunnymen will be playing their tour warm up here in Gloucester on December 3rd.
Off on a national tour, the band are playing at much larger capacity venues around the country but will be starting off with an intimate gig at the Guildhall.
Echo & the Bunnymen's dark, swirling fusion of gloomy post-punk and Doors-inspired psychedelia brought the group a handful of British hits in the early '80s, including the infamous 'Killing Moon' and 'The Cutter', while attracting a cult following in the United States. The self titled album Echo & the Bunnymen released in 1987 became their biggest American hit, and was a success in England as well, reaching number four. However, the album indicated that the group was in a musical holding pattern and at the end of 1988 lead vocalist Ian McCulloch left the band to pursue a solo career.
During the first half of the 90's Echo & the Bunnymen continued to perform without McCulloch while he released several albums. However they reformed in 1997 producing the LP Evergreen. Two years later, they returned with What Are You Going to Do With Your Life. The new millennium brought Echo & the Bunnymen back to basics. The British press touted the band's storybook flair found on 1983's Ocean Rain and figured such spark would be found on their ninth album. Flowers (released in 2001), which reflected McCulloch's dark breezy vocals, and Sergeant's signature hooks.
In 2002 the group received the Q Inspiration award. The award is for inspiring "new generations of musicians, songs and music lovers in general." The band were said to be worthy winners as they have done much to promote the Mersey music scene. In a later interview for Magnet magazine, McCulloch said "It validates everything that we've tried to achieve-cool, great timeless music. It's not like an inspiration award affecting the past, it's affecting the current music."
Since then the band have continued to release new material and tour both the UK and US. Having conquered the festival circuit in the last few years they have maintained a stage presence that is often lacking in newer bands.
