Music through the ages in Gloucester
Music through the ages in Gloucester
2nd September 2010
Gloucester’s Heritage Open Days will turn the city’s historic buildings in to music venues for the weekend of the 9 – 12 September.
A festival of music will take place across the city including music from the 15th century through to organ recitals by the Cathedral’s current organ scholar.
A new small group of experienced local singers have formed especially for this year’s heritage open days. The New Heritage Singers perform songs from the period of the building they appear in and will be performing at St Mary de Lode, St Nicholas Church, St Mary de Crypt and the Friends Meeting House.
Other acts include the ‘Waites of Gloucester’ who are based on a group which performed in the city in the 14th & 15th Century, The Pepush Consort who specialise in Baroque music from the 18th century and a performance from the Salvation Army Band.
Martyn White, Cabinet Member for Culture and Heritage at Gloucester City Council said “It is excellent to see Gloucester’s historic buildings open to the public but also being brought to life with a diverse range of musical events.”
Heritage Open Days celebrates Gloucester’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to properties that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission. Every year on four days in September, buildings of every age, style and function throw open their doors. It is a once-a-year chance to discover hidden architectural treasures and enjoy a wide range of tours, events and activities which bring to life local history and culture.
Gloucester Heritage Open Days are organised by Gloucester Civic Trust, Gloucester City Council and marketing gloucester ltd.
