The City of Gloucester has got numerous events to take advantage of this August Bank Holiday Weekend building up to the fantastic event that is The Crucible. From a swing and blues showboat night to a BBC History Festival and Motor Shows to Rugby celebrations, there will be something to suit all tastes and styles this weekend.
The BBC History Festival celebrates 2,000 years of heritage with a whole day of activities for the whole family. On Saturday 28th August from 10am until 4pm Gloucester Cathedral will be hosting Hands on History as part of the festival. This FREE event includes re-enactors, archive films, displays, heritage talks, a children's treasure trails, lots of Hands on History activities and BBC Radio Gloucestershire live on air. There will also be a star guest: TV Presenter Jules Hudson.
If you are a big fan of Gloucester Rugby then the Gloucester Festival of Rugby will be ideally suited for you. It has always been a popular event and this year the annual celebration will be taking place from Saturday 28th August for 14 days. Highlights over the weekend include the screening of the 2009 film starring Matt Damon about the 1995 Rugby World Cup at Gloucester Guildhall on Saturday 28th(charge applies), a charity touch rugby event at Gloucester All Blues, The Oxleaze on Sunday 29th at 11.30 and a chance to meet some of the Rugby teams new players at Gloucester Rugby Star Suite, Kingsholm for FREE on Monday 30th August.
There is plenty to keep you entertained at the Docks over this weekend, Coots Bar and Cafe are holding a Bangers and Beer weekend with speciality sausages, cask beer, ciders and locally made ice cream to enjoy.
There is also the chance to take part in Steam Powered Duck Racing thanks to the Waterways Museum. Buy a rubber duck for a £1 and attempt to hit the target. Have lots of fun and help raise funds for the museum. First race is due to start at 11am.
Also English Holiday Cruises are holding a 'Ain't Misbehavin' Showboat Dinner Dance on the Oliver Cromwell Paddler Wheeler on Saturday 28th August. This will include a 3 course dinner and a chance to enjoy a great swing and blues duo for only £16.50 per person. The event will begin when the bar opens at 7pm with dinner to be served at 7.30pm. Advance booking is essential, please contact Gloucester Tourist Information Centre on 01452 396572.
What’s more Gloucester Quays will be hosting the first FREE Gloucester Motor Show on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th August. A chance to see all that’s best and new in cars and motorbikes from all the top dealers in the county. It is the premier wheels event of the summer for both petrol heads and families.
Don’t forget that the biggest sculpture exhibition in the last 10 years The Crucible is starting on 1st September at Gloucester Cathedral.
