The Beat is on at Free Music Festival in Gloucester Park
19th July 2010
Ska and 2-Tone legends The Beat head up a huge bill of free music in Gloucester Park this Saturday (July 24th).
Music in the Park will feature more than 20 bands and DJs spread over two stages, with headliners The Beat set to rock the main stage as part of their 30th anniversary tour. The Birmingham collective, along with the likes of The Specials and The Selecter, have kept the ska and 2-Tone flag flying since the late 1970s, and with soul, punk and reggae influences thrown in too, they truly are a band for all tastes!
The line up also includes quirky rockers Flipron (think The Zutons if they hailed from Glastonbury), amazing blues harmonica star Paul Lamb and the Kingsnakes, dub heavyweights Black Canvas, R&B/street dance party starters Portlan (formerly Britain’s Got Talent stars Nemisis), indie/electro/soul newcomer Rufio Summers and spoof old skool hip hop act (and splendidly named) DJ Freddy Fridge Magnet and Drunken Uncle Bungle.
Opening the show will be the Choir Factor, a 30 – 40 strong contemporary choir made up of local singers, whose renditions of pop and rock classics and current tunes are sure to make for a great start to the day.
The event also features a second stage, curated by Young Gloucestershire, showcasing the region’s finest young bands and DJs. In addition there’ll be a beer tent, food and drink, stalls, funfair and urban beach to keep the kids happy while mum and dad rock out!
Andrew Mitchell-Stead of marketing gloucester ltd, the company organising the event on behalf of Gloucester City Council, said: “We really look forward to this event each year. The bands keep getting better and better, the audience is always huge and really friendly, there’s a great atmosphere and you simply can’t beat music being performed live.”
Full line up can be found here.
Summer in Gloucester is organised by marketing gloucester ltd and Gloucester City Council, with sponsorship and support from Young Gloucestershire, Kings Walk Shopping, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Gloucester City Homes, Gloucestershire County Council, World Jungle, BBC Radio Gloucestershire, Gloucester Quays Designer Outlet, Heart 102.4, soglos.com and The Citizen.
