World Wide Knit in public day at Gloucester Cathedral
World Wide Knit in public day at Gloucester Cathedral
2nd June 2010
If you go down to College Green on Saturday 12th June you're sure of a big surprise. For that's the day the knitters will have their picnic.
Gloucester Cathedral's new Knitting Club is inviting knitters in the city to celebrate World Knit in Public Day on College Green in front of the Cathedral. Knitters are invited to bring a picnic, something to sit on and their knitting.
"We'd love people to come and join us," said organiser Lynne Lee, "we'll be there from 11am and 3pm and people can just pop along for as long as they want with their knitting." Even complete novices are welcome to come along and knit. The group will provide wool and needles and help to
get started. People who haven't got a knitting project on the go can come along and knit some blanket squares for the Knit-A-Square charity project which provides warm blankets for AIDS orphans in South Africa.
The Knitters Picnic will take place from 11am to 3pm on Saturday 12 June.
More information about WWKiP Day
World Wide Knit in Public Day was started in 2005 as a way for knitters to come together and enjoy each other's company. WWKiP Day is the largest knitter run event in the world. Each local event is put together by a volunteer or a group of volunteers. WWKiP Day is really about
showing the general public that knitting can be a community activity in a very distinct way.
World Wide Knit in Public Day utilizes the internet, where volunteer hosts are able to sign up, and knitters are able to find local events with ease. There are various online forums where hosts and knitters meet to talk about the plans for their individual events.
In 2005 there were about 25 local events around the world. In 2006 there were about 70 local events. 2007 there were almost 200. In 2008 there were 800 events around the world.
