Half Term Family Fun at Gloucester Cathedral
Half Term Family Fun at Gloucester Cathedral
19th May 2010
Gloucester Cathedral has a day of free creative activities on Friday 4 June during Spring Half Term.
Families can make a clay model of a gargoyle or an angel, design a mosaic stained-glass window, try brass rubbing, or take part in the Angel Delight trail. Cathedral volunteers will be giving out wooden "WOW" signs for visitors to find the part of the Cathedral that makes them think "WOW" and take a picture. Admission is free and the activities are on offer from 10am until 4pm.
Younger visitors can take the Teddy Trail with Brother Edward Bear who will guide them around the building.
Upstairs in the Gallery, families can try out the amazing Whispering Gallery, where you can hear the whispers of people standing on the other side of the Cathedral. Also in the Gallery, families can try their hand at the Gallery Gazer's Guide; complete the giant stained-glass-window jigsaw featuring King Edward II; dress up in a bishop's mitre and crozier (hat and crook) and bring their cameras along to have their picture taken in the Bishop's chair.
There's something for the adults too, with an exhibition about the 600-year-old Great East Window - the size of a tennis court and one of the largest stained glass windows in the country.
Entrance to the Gallery is free for accompanied children and £2.00 for adults. The cathedral is open to all, but welcomes donations of £5.00 per adult towards its work.
For a small charge, energetic families can attempt the Tower Tour. 269 steps will take them up to the bell tower to visit Great Peter, hear the bells being rung and see for forty miles across the county. Tours take place daily at 2.30pm with an additional tour at 1.30pm on Bank Holiday Monday and Saturday. Tickets for the tour are £3.00 for adults and £1.00 for children.
