Gifford’s Circus comes to Gloucester with its 10th anniversary show, Yasmine – a musical

17th May 2010

Giffords Circus
Giffords Circus, a quintessentially British experience, presents Yasmine - a musical – a new show inspired by the life of legendary equestrienne Yasmine Smart, for its 10th anniversary year. Produced and written by Nell Gifford, the musical will open 20th May in Gloucester.

‘I loved it, and the night after I saw it, I dreamt about it, too’

The Guardian

‘The nation’s most glamorous troupe’

The Sunday Telegraph

‘The absolutely essential British summer experience’

ELLE Magazine

Circus legend and number one British horse trainer Yasmine Smart will appear in this magical production playing herself. Yasmine is circus royalty. As the grand-daughter of famous English showman Billy Smart and Elleano Stey, who herself crossed the Thames on a wire in 1951, circus – and the glamour surrounding it – defined Yasmine’s childhood.

With dazzling design influences from the early Paris nightclubs, the show represents the golden age of circus. It is a fantastical musical, playing fast and loose with biographical and historical details to extract the fantasy and the essence from Yasmine’s life story. She will be training seven new horses for the show and will be starring alongside world-renowned acrobats, musicians, mime artists, jugglers, comics and dancers from all over the world. Star acts include multi award winning Belgian mime artists Les Freres Taquin, Ethiopian juggling sensations Bibi and Bichu, as well as local Gloucestershire talent Emily Seal.

Emily Seal from Bourton on the Water has taken on the role of the young Yasmine. Although being a keen horsewoman and having ridden all her life, this is her debut performance.

Gifford’s Circus was set up by Nell in 1999 and she has singlehandedly maintained it as the only genuine, travelling celebration of British circus. It is dreamlike and the most perfect example of circus endeavour. In a glamorous 1940s setting Yasmine – a musical offers visual surprises and exciting acts.

The event will take place at Llanthony Priory in Gloucester Quays from the 20th - 24th May.  Tickets are available from Gloucester Tourist Information Centre in person or by phone on 01452 396572 or online
