Kwasi Danquah (born June 10, 1987), better known by his stage name Tinchy Stryder, is a British grime music artist of Ghanaian origin. Stryder hails from Bow in East London. Tinchy's debut album Catch 22 was released on 17th August 2009, and contained UK number ones: "Number 1", featuring N-Dubz) and "Never Leave You", featuring Amelle Berrabah of the Sugababes.
Stryder started at the age of 13 on pirate radio sets in East London with other well known grime MCs such as Dizzee Rascal. His stage name was derived from the video game, Strider, a video game he grew up with.
Tinchy Stryder is currently one of the UK’s most exciting pop artists around, with 2 number one singles and a hit album to his name. In the past 2 years he has crossed over from one of the brightest young MCs in London’s underground grime scene to massive mainstream chart success. The buzz surrounding the stuttering electro sound of early single Stryderman led to interest from major label Island Records, allowing him to reach a much wider audience.
Tinchy, real name Kwasi Danquah, was born in Ghana in 1986 and moved to East London at a young age. He was brought up and still lives in one of the capital’s most dangerous boroughs – Tower Hamlets; yet despite his tough upbringing he has a distinctly positive outlook on life and is determined to provide a positive role model for kids across the country.
By the age of 21, Tinchy was a seasoned MC on the grime and London pirate radio scene. Within months of signing to Island Tinchy scored 2 number one singles in a row last year with the aptly titled Number 1 featuring N-Dubz and Never Leave You featuring Amelle from the Sugababes, with latest album Catch 22 going Gold within 2 weeks of release. Live Stryder easily assumes the role of self created ‘Star in the Hood’ showman MC, enthusiastically encouraging his audience to join in.
"If Grime was the football world, Tinchy Stryder would be like your Michael Owens and Wayne Rooney’s of today." - The Independent
"Tinchy Stryder proved an early favourite at the 2009 V Festival this afternoon, seemingly able to direct the Chelmsford crowd to join in with him at will." - NME
