Not just for the birds, enjoy the dawn chorus in Gloucester
22nd April 2010
In Gloucester the dawn chorus is not just for the birds.
'Early bird' visitors tothe city of Gloucester and residents are being made an offer too good to resist
by the Gloucester city council's countryside unit.
Get up early and join a countryside ranger to listen to the dawn chorus and find out just what birds are singing.
Gloucester Countryside Manager, Derek Wakefield-Brown, explained: "Even though we live in a city we are lucky to have some magnificent open spaces. At this time of year the dawn chorus is one of nature's brilliant events.
"It is worth making the effort to experience it. There are lots of birds singing their hearts out and we will talk visitors through what species are contributing."
There will be two opportunities to listen to the dawn chorus:
- Sunday April 25th at Robinswood Hill Country Park. Meet at the Visitor Centre at 5.15am
- Sunday May 2nd at Alney Island. Meet at 5.00am atthe car park between Westgate bridge and Castlemeads Way.
For people who can't face getting up early the rangers will be providing an opportunity to experience favourite urban birds in Quedgeley. Meeting at Quedgeley Library on Wednesday April 28th at 7.40pm.
Added Derek: "This will be an opportunity to see and listen to the birds as they start to settle down for the evening. It should provide a restful and calming end to the day."
