Gloucester Carnival back on the road

Gloucester Carnival back on the road

12th April 2010

Gloucester’s traditional Carnival Procession is back on the road due to public demand – and now organisers are asking the people of Gloucester to really get behind it.

Plans to run the parade around the perimeter of Gloucester Park rather than the traditional route because of road works in Southgate Street were met with disappointment from carnival supporters last week, so the City Council asked organisers to agree an alternative route for 2010 which would allow the procession to leave the park and wind through the streets.

The carnival procession, which will take place on Saturday 17th July, will also feature live music, walkabout performers, food and drink, fairground rides and attractions, stalls and lots more.

Rather than taking its usual route over the Cross in the city centre, this summer’s parade will travel along Park Road, Trier Way, Eastgate Street, Brunswick Road and Spa Road, allowing it to begin and end in the city park in keeping with tradition.

Organiser Andrew Mitchell-Stead of marketing gloucester ltd, the company organising the carnival on behalf of Gloucester City Council, said: “We’re always happy to listen to what people have to say about events in the city and we’re pleased that people feel so strongly about the carnival procession, so we’ve worked with the City Council over the past week to get the parade back on the road and give residents what they want.”

“The number of people taking part in the procession and watching it on the streets has dropped in recent years, so after such a strong reaction to the suggestion of changing the format, we’re hoping that this means more and more people will get firmly behind it, be a part of it and truly help to create a carnival atmosphere in July.”

Anyone interested in taking part in the carnival procession should download an entry form, contact marketing gloucester ltd on 01452 207020, e-mail info@marketinggloucester.co.uk or pick up an entry form from Gloucester Tourist Information Centre, the Guildhall or North Warehouse in the Docks.
