Kate Nash needs little or no introduction. Charming her way into the hearts of music fans the world over with her vocal eccentricity and blasé grasp of the Queen’s English from the moment she first appeared on the scene, two albums on she’s still producing songs full of her trademark wit and personality, with just a sprinkling of anarchy. And now she is bringing her thoroughly British pop music back to Gloucester for what will prove to be a fantastic night at the Guildhall.
It almost seems that Kate Nash came to music entirely by chance. Originally aiming for a career in theatre and studying at the infamous BRIT School, a fall down a flight of stairs and a broken foot left her housebound and with nothing to do except write songs. And it went from there. As soon as she was back on her feet she started booking gigs, found herself a manager and a then producer for her songs. Her debut single, Caroline’s A Victim, was released through Moshi Moshi Records in February 2007, and sold out all 2000 copies that were made, with the video receiving airplay on MTV2. Signing to Fiction Records two months later, Nash’s first full release, Foundations, entered the UK single chart at #2, with her first album, Made of Bricks, reaching the heady heights of #1 in the UK album chart. A year of festival appearances followed, including Glastonbury and Latitude, as well as world-wide releases of three more singles from the album.
In 2009 Nash teamed up with Bernard Butler, producer of Duffy’s Rockferry album and former guitarist with Suede, and in April 2010 the first single from the resultant album, titled My Best Friend Is You, was released. The single, Do-Wah-Doo, was hyped as having a more “girl group” sound and gained Nash her second-highest chart position of #15. The album charted at #8.
As a performer, Nash is generally hailed as one of those artists who really puts some effort into building a rapport with the audience, and with big sound and catchy melodies what more could you want from a show? This is guaranteed to be a sell-out.
