CHRISTMAS PIES FOR HUNGRY PILGRIMS
CHRISTMAS PIES FOR HUNGRY PILGRIMS
12th December 2010
Gloucester Cathedral is gearing up for hungry Christmas shoppers with a special festive Pilgrim’s Pie. The hand-made pie is packed with beef, chestnuts and horseradish and encased in pastry made from flour sourced from Shipton Mill near Tetbury and butter from Netherend Farm in the Forest of Dean. A festive chestnut version is available for those looking for a vegetarian option.
Like the original Pigrim’s pies, both pecial pies are triangular in shape, to represent the Holy Trinity. The original Pilgrim’s Pie of hogget lamb, onion, garlic, white beans, herbs and honey-roasted carrots and Monk’s Pie of white beans, onions, spinach, nettles, fresh herbs and Single Gloucester cheese are still on the menu.
The Cathedral Coffee Shop is offering a free tea or coffee with every Pilgrim’s pie sold during December and January. Mandy Neufeld, Coffee Shop Manager said: “Christmas shopping can be really busy and stressful. it’s worth making a special pilgrimage to the Cathedral to relax and enjoy a hearty lunch. And we’ll throw in a free tea or coffee to keep the cold out.”
The Pilgrim’s Pie was launched in May this year, following a competition by the Cathedral to find the best pie-maker in the West. The competition was won by Stroud Pasty Company who hand-make the exclusive pies from ingredients almost entirely grown or reared on their farm in the Slad valley.
