Commonwealth congratulations for Gloucester

Both Zoe Derham, who won bronze at the recent Commonwealth games in
hammer throwing, and Lorraine Shaw, who coached the silver and bronze
medal winners are Gloucester girls.
The city has a whole host of sporting facilities enabling people of all
ages to get involved in a range of physical activities.
Did you know the city boasts a highly successful rowing club that has
produced and trained Olympic medal winners, an athletics track, a beacon
tennis centre as well as state of the art facilities at GL1?
Over the past year, the city has been host to a range of national and
international sporting events including, the European synchronized
swimming championships and the national wheelchair tennis championships.
The city's tennis centre at Oxstalls are this year hosting of the BUCS
national individual fencing championships.
Dawn Lawson of Aspire Springers, who's club is based at GL1, is a
national Trampolining coach and works with five Great Britain
competitors who are hoping to be at the 2012 Olympics and the next
Commonwealth games in Glasgow.
Martyn White, cabinet member for heritage and leisure said, "our
congratulations go out to Zoe and the rest of the GB squad who
represented us in the Commonwealth Games. The city council works hard to
promote sport for all in the city and to enable those from all
backgrounds to get involved in a range of physical activities.
"Team Gloucester has been set up to help utilise the facilities in the
city and we are hopeful to be a training camp for International teams
attending the Olympics in 2012."
The councils Sports Development service run a range of different
activities throughout the year to help people get involved in sport,
including a youth sports programme - StreetGames.
