Harvest thanksgiving at Gloucester Cathedral
Harvest thanksgiving at Gloucester Cathedral
1st October 2010
Gloucester Cathedral will hold a County Harvest Thanksgiving Service on Sunday 3 October at 3.00pm attended by representatives of the National Farmers' Union, the Gloucestershire Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs, the Country Land and Business Association and the Women's Land Army and Timber Corps.
The special Evensong service will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI).
RABI is a grant-making charity that supports members of the farming community facing need, hardship or distress.
It was founded in 1860 and provides long-term care and emergency help to retired farmers, farm workers and working farmers and their families who find themselves in financial difficulties.
Currently it supports approximately 1,500 long-term beneficiaries and during 2009 gave out £1.8 million in grants. RABI has helped thousands of working families through BSE and the foot and mouth epidemics.
Canon Neil Heavisides commented: "The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution has done so much over the years to offer support and care for those who work on the land and whom we sometimes take for granted. We look forward to welcoming members of the farming community to the Cathedral."
